Meaning a B12 deficiency can leave you feeling tired and sluggish\u2014something none of us can afford to do these days.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">Because our bodies do not make B12, we must get it from food sources, which primarily includes animal products such as eggs, dairy, and red meat and\/or supplements. The thing about B12 is no plants, fungi, or animals are capable of synthesizing this vitamin. All B12 is made by strains of bacteria that have the particular enzymes for synthesis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">However, there are plant-based sources that naturally contain B12 like shitake mushrooms, spirulina, or fortified food items like nutritional yeast, soy milk and meat substitutes. But since these options are less prevalent than their counterparts, vegetarians are at particularly high risk for B12 deficiency.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">2. Vitamin D<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">Vitamin D is needed for maintaining healthy bones, teeth and muscles.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span>It is also required to support cardiovascular functions, immune activity and sustain a healthy pregnancy. Vitamin D is produced in the skin when exposed to sunlight and this is the major source of Vitamin D for most people. Usually, 20 minutes of sunlight on the face and arms is needed to manufacture adequate Vitamin D.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">Countries in the arctic region have limited sunlight exposure throughout the year and are more likely to go for Vitamin D supplementation.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span>Vegetarians too, in our country have fewer options to look out for and have to rely on fortified grains and cereals as the primary source of Vitamin D.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">Requirement of Vitamin D however, isn\u2019t exclusive to vegetarians or people from Polar Regions \u2013 everyone should be concerned about their Vitamin D intake.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">3. Calcium<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">Calcium is a mineral that requires vitamin D to be properly absorbed by the body. It is particularly important for maintaining healthy and strong bones for people of all age-groups. It plays a pivotal role in heartbeat regulation, muscle contraction, nerve impulse transmission and blood clotting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">Adverse effects of calcium deficiency can lead to low bone mineral density, an increased risk of fractures and osteoporosis, if left untreated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">Calcium is mainly found in dairy products, dark leafy greens, almonds, soybeans and fortified soymilk, tofu, and tempeh. Even if you eat a lot of green veggies, it is advisable for everyone to consider calcium supplementation.
